Syllabus

Homework

Problems enclosed in parentheses are bonus problems. They are optional and should be turned in directly to me. Successful solution of bonus problems will have an unspecified but generally positive effect on your grade.

Grading Policy

Your grade will be computed from six equally weighted components: homework average, three exams, and a final exam (which counts as two components). Your lowest component will be dropped and the rest averaged to produce your score for the course. Students will be ranked according to this score, and grades will be assigned according to the ranking. Homework will be assigned weekly, and the lowest score will be dropped before the average is computed.

Calculators are not allowed on exams. They may be used, and may occasionally be useful, on homework; a basic calculator will be enough for this class.

Academic honesty is assumed as a matter of course. Cheating on exams will lead to an automatic grade of zero and possibly other consequences.

Study Groups

Students may wish to form study groups of 2-5 people to discuss the homework. A group size of 3 or 4 is ideal. Study groups are also very important when preparing for exams. While students are strongly encouraged to work in groups on homework, each student is responsible for writing up his or her own solutions in his or her own words.
